Hanab installs first prefab substation in Wierden, marking the start of large-scale rollout

Amsterdam, 28 May 2026 – Hanab is installing a new prefabricated medium-voltage distribution substation at Akeleistraat in Wierden, commissioned by Enexis. This is the first substation Hanab is delivering as part of a nationwide programme under which hundreds of similar stations will be constructed over the next ten years.

The substation forms an important link in the medium-voltage network. Medium-voltage cables converge in the station, and a Siemens electrical installation distributes electricity onwards to homes and businesses in the surrounding area.

“The energy transition demands both speed and quality. With this first substation, together with Hanab we are taking an important step towards expanding our electricity network more quickly and efficiently. Strong collaboration and thorough preparation are essential in this.”
Johan Zomerdijk, Project Manager Enexis

“This project demonstrates what Hanab stands for: technical expertise, smart standardisation and close collaboration. Particularly in a complex environment like this, we make a difference by seamlessly connecting disciplines and organising the work efficiently.”
Kevin van der Linden, Project Manager Hanab

Building tomorrow’s energy infrastructure
The installation in Wierden marks an important milestone. In the coming years, large numbers of substations like this will need to be realised to future-proof the energy network. By using prefabricated components, the construction process can be accelerated and standardised. The substation is assembled from four prefabricated elements — the foundation pit, superstructure, installation, and roof — which are brought together on site.

A technical feat
The project is being carried out in the middle of a residential area, which adds an extra level of complexity. Whereas such substations are typically placed in rural locations, this site is characterised by limited space and significant involvement from local residents and other stakeholders. In addition, the project was executed alongside multiple parallel activities, including the installation of a medium-voltage cable route and a directional drilling operation. The network also remained operational throughout the works thanks to temporary on-site provisions.

Intensive collaboration
The project exemplifies close cooperation between multiple disciplines within Hanab. Collaboration with the client Enexis, partners, and the local authority played a key role in delivering this complex project.

Impressive logistics operation
A large crane is being used for the installation, lifting each component individually into position. The heaviest element weighs over 73 tonnes, and in total approximately 183 tonnes of materials are being handled.
