Three questions for Davy
Davy Broeren started at Hanab 26 years ago as an assistant fitter and progressed to Site Manager within Pipelines & Utilities. He now leads multiple teams and ensures complex district heating projects run smoothly. This means working in busy city centres, coordinating with different parties and making sure everything comes together at the right moment.
Taking on challenges, thinking ahead and delivering quality
What makes your work worthwhile?
“I simply enjoy my work. Every day is different, and in the morning I never know how the day will end. Sometimes everything goes according to plan, but often you come across things you first have to solve.
That’s exactly what I like about the job. The more challenging it gets, the more satisfying it is to make it work. And when it all comes together at the end of the day and everything runs as it should, I go home feeling satisfied.”
How do you recognise a true craftsman?
“You notice it while working. Someone who knows what they’re doing sees more quickly what needs to be done and asks different questions.
In books you’ll find the guidelines, but out in the field you come across situations that are never described exactly like that. You have to understand how things really work.
For me, quality is key. In the end, we deliver a product to the client. I sometimes say: if you buy a new car and it’s covered in dents, you wouldn’t take it home either.
That’s how we look at the pipelines we install underground. It simply has to be done properly and neatly.”
What does good collaboration look like to you?
“It starts with respecting each other and listening to people. Everyone has their own role in the project, and you need one another to make it work.
I also try to involve colleagues in what I’m doing. For example, if we have to weld plastic, I first show how it works and then let my team do it themselves.
That way they learn the trade in practice—and it makes the whole team stronger.
