Putting together a jigsaw puzzle with numbered pieces
The Rug Roling Building OBS18 in Groningen is a prime example of innovative renovation and sustainable transformation. The former library building was transformed into a modern faculty building for the University of Groningen, where learning, working and socialising are front and centre.
From library to vibrant faculty building
The former public library in the centre of Groningen has undergone a complete transformation. Dark rooms have made way for light-filled patios with workspaces and meeting areas. The aim was to bring all staff and students of the Faculty of Law under one roof, in an inspiring environment that encourages collaboration and knowledge-sharing.
Sustainable and energy-efficient solutions
The building is entirely gas-free and equipped with heat pumps and solar panels. Hanab Installation Technology implemented energy-saving measures in lighting, ventilation and heating. A conscious choice was also made to use sustainable materials, including plastic pipes instead of steel, in order to reduce the ecological footprint.
Innovative installation method: DLS
The greatest efficiency gains came from use of the DLS concept, a plug-and-play solution in which pipes were delivered ready-to-use and pre-numbered. This made the installation process as straightforward as completing a jigsaw puzzle, allowing one floor to be completed every week. With this approach, the building was ready as early as July, well ahead of the start of the new academic year.
Collaboration and planning
The success of this project is partly due to the close collaboration between the client, the architect and Hanab Installation Technology. Clear communication and a tight schedule ensured that all disciplines worked together seamlessly. Despite the complex urban location and the scale of the project, the building was completed in record time, without compromising on quality or sustainability.
